A protraction face mask is an external appliance, worn for a set number of hours daily, that uses elastic bands anchored to a frame outside the face to pull a retrusive upper jaw forward. It is used in growing children and young adolescents whose upper jaw has developed behind the lower jaw, producing a Class III bite — commonly seen as an underbite, a concave facial profile, or front teeth that bite edge-to-edge or behind the lower teeth. Because the upper jaw's growth plates are still active at this age, this window offers a unique, non-surgical opportunity to guide the jaw's position forward. Attempted in adulthood after growth has finished, the same correction typically requires orthognathic (jaw) surgery — so early diagnosis and timing are central to the case for this treatment.قناع الوجه الجرّار هو جهاز خارجي، يُرتدى لعدد محدد من الساعات يومياً، يستخدم أشرطة مطاطية مثبتة بإطار خارج الوجه لسحب الفك العلوي المتراجع للأمام. يُستخدم عند الأطفال والمراهقين الصغار النامين الذين تطور فكهم العلوي خلف الفك السفلي، منتجاً عضة من الصنف الثالث — تظهر عادة كعضة سفلية، أو ملامح وجه مقعرة، أو أسنان أمامية تُطبق حافة لحافة أو خلف الأسنان السفلية. ولأن صفائح النمو في الفك العلوي لا تزال نشطة في هذا العمر، توفر هذه المرحلة فرصة فريدة وغير جراحية لتوجيه وضعية الفك للأمام. إذا حاولنا هذا التصحيح في مرحلة البلوغ بعد انتهاء النمو، فعادة ما يتطلب جراحة تقويم الفكين — لذا فإن التشخيص المبكر والتوقيت أساسيان لهذا العلاج.

Because a protraction face mask needs consistent daily wear to work with a growing jaw, it is worn at home on a prescribed number of hours per day rather than in clinic, with progress checked at regular review appointments. Timing matters: it is used specifically in growing children and young adolescents, before the growth window that makes jaw repositioning possible has closed.
